Truffaldino/theatre. USSR.
This is an original theatrical poster for the Leningrad Theater of Musical Comedy.
At the top, Russian text reads “Театр Музыкальной Комедии” (Theater of Musical Comedy). Below it appears the name A. Kolker and the title “Труффальдино” (Truffaldino), described as a musical comedy based on Carlo Goldoni’s play Servant of Two Masters.
The central image shows a masked character in a harlequin-style costume, patterned with diamond shapes in red, black, and white. He is captured mid-leap, stretching dramatically across a narrow Venetian canal. His arms are spread wide, and in one hand he holds a small stringed instrument resembling a mandolin. His pose is energetic and theatrical, suggesting comedy and movement.
On both sides of the canal are stylized buildings in warm tones—cream, red, yellow, and brown—with simple architectural details and tall chimneys. A gondola floats in the water below, reinforcing the Venetian setting. In a few windows, small figures look outward, adding a sense of narrative and curiosity.
The background is a solid, vivid blue sky, which contrasts strongly with the warm colors of the buildings and the patterned costume. The overall design is bold, graphic, and stylized, typical of mid-20th-century theatrical poster art.
