Historical context:
The Tortosa Festival is celebrated in honor of its patron saint, the Virgen de la Cinta, and takes place around the first Sunday in September. It is a festival with a long tradition.
At the beginning of the 16th century, when Alfonso of Aragón was bishop of Tortosa, with the desire to increase the cult of the Santa Cinta, he established a festival with its own cult, on the second Sunday of October. This festival was celebrated on this date until 1867, when the festival was moved to the first Sunday in September, the date on which it is celebrated today.
In 1863, the Virgen de la Cinta was proclaimed, along with the Guardian Angel, patron saint of the city.
The festival begins on the Saturday before the weekend of the first Sunday in September, the day on which the proclamation of the children's pubillas and pubillas and the proclamation of the Fiesta Mayor are celebrated. The Fiestas de la Cinta, as they are popularly known, are celebrated for five days, from Thursday to the first Monday in September. Sunday is the day of the Patroness of the City and all religious events take place in honor of the Virgen de la Cinta. During these days, citizens go out to the streets to participate in popular, folkloric and leisure activities, such as popular dances, music concerts, correfoc, iris festival, distribution of religious acts such as the offering and the procession.
