Godzilla vs. Gigan, Spain.

Godzilla vs. Gigan, Spain.

This is an original Spanish theatrical poster for the 1972 Japanese kaiju film Godzilla vs. Gigan, directed by Jun Fukuda. In Spain, the movie was marketed under the sensational title “Gorgo y Superman se citan en Tokio,” a name designed to attract audiences with familiar or exciting-sounding references, even though the actual monsters featured are Godzilla and Gigan.

The artwork captures a dramatic moment of destruction and spectacle. Godzilla dominates the right side of the image, his massive, charcoal-scaled body leaning forward as he unleashes his atomic breath in a blazing beam. Opposite him stands Gigan, a menacing, cyborg-like creature with hooked claws and a circular buzzsaw embedded in his chest, returning fire amid smoke and flame. The city around them is engulfed in chaos, with explosions erupting at their feet and military jets streaking across the sky.

Above the battling monsters, a humanoid figure soars downward with arms outstretched — this is Jet Jaguar, the heroic robot who aids Godzilla in the film. His presence in the sky reinforces the comic-book dynamism of the composition, giving the scene a sense of exaggerated, almost superhero-like action.

The poster’s bold red lettering and fiery imagery emphasize action and spectacle, reflecting the early-1970s shift in the Godzilla series toward more colorful, high-energy monster battles aimed at younger audiences.
