Goalkeeper, Spain.

Goalkeeper, Spain.

Title: “The goalkeeper”

The Royal Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the multinational West Nally and the Maeght Gallery in Paris, commissioned fifteen artists of different nationalities to make the posters that were going to represent the World Cup and the fourteen host cities of the matches in Spain in 1982. This poster represents the city of Madrid, Spain.

MADRID: “The goalkeeper”, by Eduardo Arroyo from Madrid (1937). After his return and the normalization of his situation in Spain in 1976, since he was expelled from the country due to his manifest opposition to the Franco regime, his work began to be valued in Spain. He has always felt attracted to sports, he was interested in basketball, soccer and, above all, boxing, so it is not strange that he put his art at the service of sports. This poster shows a goalkeeper dressed in the cap typical of the first half of the 20th century and seen from behind in a calm and expectant attitude on a flat, monochrome background. With this he alludes to the loneliness of the goalkeeper while the game takes place outside his area. His back has been magnified to occupy the entire lower half of the support, signaling the capital importance of his role in the most decisive moments of a match.
