The film was written and directed by acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. It follows a cabaret singer, Yolanda, who seeks refuge in a convent for "fallen women" after her drug-dealer boyfriend dies of an overdose. However, the convent itself is far from conventional, housing eccentric nuns with their own vices and secrets.
The film was notably rejected from the Cannes Film Festival due to its critical and somewhat sacrilegious depiction of Catholicism in modern Spanish society.
