Ice Hockey, Calgary Winter Olympics. USA

This original vintage poster captures the energy of the XV Winter Olympics, held in Calgary in 1988. It was part of a limited promotional series commissioned by Northwestern Mutual Life and famously broadcast on ABC-TV. The artwork itself is a striking example of 1980s sports illustration, utilizing a bold, geometric style that breaks the figure of the hockey goalie into sharp, colorful planes of red, white, and blue.

The goalie is depicted in a classic "butterfly" stance, ready to block a shot, with a stylized hockey puck resting near the blade of his stick. One of the most interesting details for hockey fans is the mask; the design mirrors the vintage fiberglass face-hugging masks that were transitioning out of professional use around that era, giving the piece a nostalgic feel.

Created by artist W. Fitzmiller, this poster was one of twelve distinct designs meant to celebrate the various disciplines of the Winter Games. Because they were distributed as a promotional set rather than mass-produced retail art, these posters have become collectible items for sports historians and art enthusiasts alike. Today, they are often sought after for their clean, mid-century modern influence and their snapshot of a pivotal moment in Olympic history.

The Soviet Union won its seventh gold medal. The silver medal was won by Finland, marking its first ever Olympic ice hockey medal. Sweden won the bronze medal. Games were held in the Olympic Saddledome, the Stampede Corral, and Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. This is so far the only Olympic tournament held on North American soil that was not won by either Canada or United States
