Football World Cup Spain'82- Chillida. Spain.

Title: "Despeje"

The Royal Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the multinational West Nally and the Maeght Gallery in Paris, commissioned fifteen artists of different nationalities to make the posters that were going to represent the World Cup and the fourteen host cities of the matches in Spain in 1982. This poster represents the city of Bilbao, Basque Country/Euskadi, Spain.

BILBAO: "Despeje", by Eduardo Chillida from San Sebastian (1924-2002). On the poster appears, on a white background, the drawing of a fist clearing a ball formed by the repetition of the word Bilbao next to the year 82. That gesture is one of the most characteristic of a football goalkeeper and Chillida knows him very well, because in his youth he was goalkeeper of the first team of Real Sociedad. The trembling line of the drawing, of a certain inexperienced impression, so characteristic of the artist, is the result of the fact that he drew with his left hand despite not being left-handed so that his hand did not act impulsively but governed by the mind. Without leaving aside the poster, it is worth mentioning that the artist drew hands on many occasions, using his own as a model, because for Chillida the hands were the creative, transformative instrument, at the service of the intellect of the human being and hence its importance.
