Barcelona fair, Spain.

Barcelona fair, Spain.

This original Spanish poster announces the XXVI Feria Oficial e Internacional de Muestras en Barcelona, held from 1 to 20 June 1958. It promotes the twenty-sixth edition of Barcelona’s official international trade fair, an event organized under the auspices of what is now known as Fira de Barcelona in Barcelona.

The design reflects the visual language of late 1950s European modernism. A stylized classical figure representing a triton (mythological Greek god of the sea) playing a conch shell to raise or calm the waves, this merman dominates the upper half of the composition, its torso twisting upward in a dramatic, gesture. This classical reference evokes tradition and cultural heritage, while the bold abstract geometry beneath it signals modern industry and forward-looking progress. Further information about Triton on this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triton_(mythology)

This original poster embodies the optimism of postwar industrial fairs in Spain, blending classical symbolism with modern abstraction to communicate both continuity and progress.

In addition to this, the logo on the left top corner represents Hermes (picture 4), the ancient Greek god closely associated with commerce and exchange. In Greek mythology, Hermes was not only the messenger of the gods but also the protector of merchants, traders, travelers, and anyone involved in buying and selling goods. He presided over negotiation, communication, profit, and the movement of goods across distances. Because trade in the ancient world depended on travel, persuasion, and trust, Hermes naturally became the divine symbol of business activity.

From a personal point of view, this poster reminds me the Fontana del Tritone (Triton Fountain) which is a seventeenth-century fountain in Rome, by the Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (see last picture).
