Animated films, East Germany.

This is an original German Democratic Republic film poster advertising three animated films:

Fantik - der kleine Elefant (Fantik - the Little Elephant): A colored animated film from the USSR.

Glückskinder (Lucky Kids): A colored animated film co-produced by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Italy, directed by Klaus Georgi.

Das rote Ahornblatt (The Red Maple Leaf): A colored puppet animation film from the German Democratic Republic (GDR), directed by Ina Rarisch.

What does it mean the “DEFA” logo on the right bottom corner?

Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft was the state-owned film studio of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) throughout the country's existence. Since 2019, DEFA's film heritage has been made accessible and licensable on the PROGRESS archive platform. The DEFA Foundation is a non-profit organisation that was established in order to preserve the films in the DEFA library as well as the film studios, and make them accessible to the public.

In the German Democratic Republic, childhood dreams took flight not only on screen but also in the vivid, hand-crafted posters that adorned cinema foyers and cultural centers. GDR children’s film posters were more than promotional tools — they were works of art designed to captivate, educate, and inspire young minds within a tightly controlled media landscape.

Far from the glossy commercial aesthetics of the West, these posters reflected a unique fusion of socialist ideals, artistic experimentation, and childlike wonder. Graphic designers used bold colors, imaginative illustrations, and playful typography to create visual worlds where fairy tales met ideological undertones. Whether promoting fairy tale adaptations, puppet animations, or original DEFA productions, the posters served as both a window to magical storytelling and a mirror of the state’s cultural ambitions.

Each poster tells a story — not just of the film it represents, but of a nation shaping its future citizens through the magic of cinema.
