"The Fairy Tales of the Night" is an extraordinarily dark film adaptation of "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart" and "Das kalte Herz," written by Wilhelm Hauff and filmed by Irina Tarkowskaya, Andrei Tarkovsky's ex-wife. Set almost entirely in nocturnal settings and interspersed with many short, also nocturnal, beginnings of fairy tales and stories, the film is imaginatively on the verge of horror cinema.
